Being a student teacher in a Grade 2/3 Montessori classroom for my PSII has given me the opportunity to demonstrate my ability to establish inclusive learning environments for all my students. Throughout my lesson plans I always am aware of students who I know may struggle with specific concepts, and I am always aware of students who will excel and may need a greater challenge. During my math unit I found many students struggled with the concept of measurement, whereas some other students already knew how to use a ruler to measure different objects using millimetres, centimetres, and meters. When planning my lessons I encouraged students who finished early to go help their peers, as this encourages a positive and healthy learning environment, and also gives students the opportunity to be leaders to their classmates who may be struggling. I also began making extra worksheets that were more difficult for students who may finish early and need to be challenged. By giving students the opportunity to be a leader and help their classmates some days, or be challenged by another worksheet on other days gave students the feeling that I did care about their learning, as I recognized who may need peer help and who may need to be challenged. Throughout my math and LA lessons I always asked many questions and encouraged students to share their thoughts or their completed work. After a student presented their work in front of the class we always ensured to give that student a round of applause. This allowed students to recognize that speaking in front of your peers can be scary, but we are all supportive of each other. I have aimed to make my classroom a safe and inclusive space for all students regardless of gender, cultural background, race, economic status, or academic ability. Having my classroom be a safe place for students is something that is very important to me. I aim to always make all students feel welcome and safe. Something I feel very passionate about is continuing to have gay-straight alliances in schools. Having the opportunity for students to be welcomed into a space, regardless of their sexuality or gender orientation, is something I hope continues to be implemented in all schools.
